Saint Valentine’s Day

It is said that there are more than 7500 million people in the world. Scattered all over the earth, with their own personality, their way of being, their customs and experiences. And of course, with their own way of expressing affection, love. Some people believe in what they call their “soul mate”, others don’t. Some people celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day or lover’s day on the 14th of February, others don’t need a date. However, there is something in common all over the world with anyone who is or who has been in love, namely that unique feeling of butterflies in your stomach. It is so magical!

And although this effect might not last forever, there are small gestures that still make you feel that excitement, that give you something to smile about and certainly, guarantee the person who has been so thoughtful a good dose of hugs and kisses.

Out of more than the 7500 million people spread out all over the planet, it is clear that each one expresses their affection in a different way. Some people are very affectionate, they don’t need dates to tell the person they love that they do. Some say it with a little note under the pillow. Others, with a surprise breakfast or a short message when you are least expecting it. A little present when you get home, a letter… Other people make the most of set dates to remind their “soul mate” that they love them, like this day, which has become an emblem for many romantics around the world.

Where does the romantic idea about the soul mate come from?

Even though almost all of us have used that term “soul mate” some time in our lives, many people are unfamiliar with the story of where the concept actually comes from. Did you know that it comes from the Classical Greece period? The Greeks used myths to explain anything that did not have a logical explanation behind it and it was the philosopher Plato in his Symposium who first spoke about this separation that is associated with the soul mates.

According to the Greeks, the human race was almost perfect. We weren’t like we are today; originally our bodies were round with 4 arms and 4 legs and a single head. These men daringly wanted to climb up to heaven and fight against the gods and it was Saturn who came up with a solution to make them weaker, without eliminating them. So he split their bodies into two, to create two humans, who would spend their lives trying to find their soul mate to become this perfect form once again for eternity.

It is interesting, isn’t it?

And do the Saint Valentine’s celebrations also have an origin?

There is a story behind it just like many other celebrations on our calendar. Although there are many critics who think that this date is simply a commercial invention, in fact this date is related to the story of a priest called Valentine.

The Roman emperor Claudius II, in Rome of the Third Century, banned marriage between young people, because he believed that a single man without a family would be a better soldier. So this priest devoted himself to marrying couples in secret, even though it was prohibited, which is why he was highly appreciated. However, his boldness lead to the emperor ordering his execution and the date he was killed, the 14th of February, was marked as the day of Saint Valentine or lovers’ day. Did you know that story?
